Termite baiting

Over the past 20 – 30 years termite control has changed dramatically. After the phase out of the Organochlorine pesticide group, termite control became a very specialised skill and knowledge has become vital. Many methods and new products are now available to pest professionals and though the life expectancy of the products may have lowered, their efficacy in colony control, safety and usability is at an all time high. One treatment type which has been a game changer is baiting. Our Experts have always been at the forefront of this, starting termite baiting with the commercial release of sentricon in the early 2000’s. From there this has became a very refined process and we have been offering the Exterra termite baiting and early interception system throughout the Manning Valley, Avon Valley and Great Lakes areas with extraordinary success for the last 10+ years.

Baiting allows us to achieve colony control where no other treatment method will. Whether directly into a nest or from 100+ meters away we used the termites own natural feeding habits against them. Termites feed through a process called trophallaxis in which the worker caste will consume the raw material, in this case Requiem bait, and return to the colony where all other castes, soldiers, nymphs and even the queen feed off its excretions. It is this process which is used to transfer the product throughout the colony. Exterra’s Requiem bait is highly palatable bait matrix which uses Chlorfluazuron, an insect growth regulator as its active ingredient. Insect growth regulators target a process called chitin synthesis, the formation of a new exoskeleton. When conditions favour, the queen will emit a pheromone which tells the colony members it is time to moult. Once they undertake the moult and cannot reform a new cuticle they will quickly perish causing the colony to collapse. One of the best features of Requiem is its almost non-toxicity to mammals. Making it the safest, most environmentally friendly product available.

Once colony elimination has been achieved, that colony will never again be a threat to your house. However, where there is one there is often more! Termites form new nests, dependent on species, by either ‘budding off’ or a reproductive flight. Either of these do not allow them to travel huge distances from the original nesting site. Because of this, we often find pockets where multiple colonies are within a destructive distance of the one house. Local Pest Experts offers Exterra with a full monitoring system designed to allow early interception of incoming attack and control the colony from outside, before they get in. We have a team of timber pest technicians with a knowledge which is second to none and dedicate our time to protect your house.

A very important part of anything timber pest related, but especially baiting is PAPERWORK. If you are going to undertake a management system to your house ensure you get all the correct paperwork relating to the job. This should include, a full termite inspection report and proposal, treatment certificate, durable notice (usually affixed in your meter box) and in the case of a monitoring system a contract which specifies exactly what is and isn’t included in your costs. Always use a reputable company with a history of good quality workmanship and after sales service.
